Every May 9th, fans of dragonball Share images of Goku on social networks. This is because Goku Day is celebrated, that character who has forcibly entered the general culture after so many years of anime and manga broadcast.
But it was not always so. This celebration began to become popular in 2015, when the Japan Anniversary Association recognized the importance of the character after repetitive requests from fans.
Why was May 9th chosen as Goku Day?
What motivated fans to choose May 9 as Goku Day? Well the answer is almost the same as Star Wars Day. In case you don’t know, every May 4th the Lucasfilm franchise is celebrated because the pronunciation in English resembles “May the force be with you” (May the 4th).
In the case of Dragon Ball, you must understand what the Japanese calendar is like, since they read it inverted. First goes the month and then the day; then, the chosen day remains as 5/9 and the pronunciation remains something similar to “Go” and “Ku”.

When is Piccolo Day?
As expected, Goku is not the only character who has his own day on the calendar. Some combine Goku Day with Piccolo Day on May 9, but others also celebrate it on the 13th of the same month.
Be that as it may, it is always good to recognize the work of Akira Toriyama and his influence in the West with his star work: Dragon Ball.
